Re: customs impounding vehicles

Dear Baxi,
According to the Customs Office, the car can remain in the North as long as the owner is here on a tourist visa. When you cross the border from the South to the North, you will receive a tourist visa stamp in your passport entitling you to remain in the TRNC as a tourist for the period stated on that stamp (usually 3 months). If you overstay that period, you are liable to fines. If you wish to stay longer than 3 months, you must apply for a residency permit. If you seek employment, you must apply for a work permit. If you wish to set up a company, you will need a business permit. Once you are no longer a tourist in the TRNC i.e. once you have overstayed your tourist visa or you have obtained a residency permit or a work permit or a business permit, you are no longer entitled to keep the car here.
