Road Tax Amnesty

The Government has introduced a temporary road tax amnesty. Under the terms of the amnesty, accumulated unpaid road tax bills and fines can be cleared with a one-off payment of 1 year’s road tax (based on the 2016 rate) plus upfront payment of 6 months or 1 year’s road tax for the current year. Any other accumulated unpaid road tax for previous years and all fines will then be waived. Payment must be made to the Tax Office and the vehicle’s MOT, emissions test and insurance must all be current.

In addition, vehicles which have been removed from the register as a result of accumulated unpaid road tax can be reinstated with a one-off payment of 2 years road tax (based on the 2016 rate) plus upfront payment of 6 months or 1 year’s road tax for the current year. Any other accumulated unpaid road tax for previous years and all fines and the usual re-registration fee will then be waived. Payment must be made to the Tax Office. An MOT must be obtained (and any fines applicable on the MOT must be paid) and the emissions test must be carried out.

The amnesty is valid or a period of 3 months only. Further information can be obtained from the Tax Office.
